Is it just me, or are frameless car doors just so much more annoying to keep clean?

I’m not talking about when passengers decide to use the glass instead of the handle to close the door. I’m talking about the 1/2-3/4-inch area around the top of the class that touches the weather sealing and the 1/2-3/4-inch area that’s part of the door where the glass retracts into when you open the door. For my car and the car before it these areas always got dirty after a few weeks.

I used to like how they look. Now I actually want my next car to have framed doors around the window.

I thought they were cool on my mom’s 1998 Neon and I still think they’re cool. I love the 4 Gran Coupe so much more than the 3 series it’s based on, and little things like that are why. My only real experience with them as an “adult” were on a Mini Cooper I drove through high school and I thought they’re not as special on a coupe (or maybe just Minis?)  for some reason but I had no cleanliness issues.

I don’t like them; they make cars noisier; but I’ve never heard of the cleaning issue, nor had it on my SLK

I never noticed that, though it’s been many years since I had a car with frameless doors. They look tons better to me though.

Probably. But it’s worth it (in my opinion).

If you park outside where it snows, they are an unmitigated pain in the ass. Ice builds up along the bottom edge and keeps the window from retracting when you pull the door handle. Hard to open, and it closes outside the seal. So I carry a putty knife to clean the ice off.

Framed windows ice up, too, but at least you can get the door open.

I used to think that when I had my 128i, but then I noticed with my CX-5 they get just as dirty.

The top front corner of the windows in my MINI get filthy this time of year which infuriates  me. Thankfully if you’re a bit careful you can easily clean right to the edge with the door open using the gas station thing.

When properly designed, they don’t need to retract. I don’t think I’d buy a car where a dead battery meant the doors were stuck shut, leaving me unable to access the hood release so I could change the battery.

This is why I’m glad my WRX doesn’t have frameless windows like older WRXs did. The few times I’ve driven my 128i in wintery weather the windows have been stuck up when opening the door, which I then have to fix by heating the interior much more than I otherwise would.

I love having frameless windows in summer though so my combo of cars works out nicely.

Ive daily driven my Z3 Coupe in the winter for years and only ever once had an issue where it was stuck, but my windows are tinted so maybe that has an effect?

I dont have any issues washing them, but they do add a little more wind noise. For my Z3 its a loud sports car anyway so idc, but for the 5 series I much prefer the full framed window and quiet ride

The last car I had that had frameless windows was an ‘84 Olds Cutlass. If the windows froze on that you just ended up tearing the weatherstripping.

I cleaned my girlfriends getz the other day. Framed windows but still an accumulated layer of filth on the glass that touches the rubber.

Maybe it's no better either way. Maybe the framed was worse since cleaning it means getting into the nooks where glass and frame meet. My frameless MR2 seems easy enough to clean, though it doesn't see that much action.
